He is a being with his own thoughts. His own story. His own fears and weaknesses as well as his hopes and strengths. He can have a bad day, or worse, he could have big problems in his life at the moment. Also he can have a good day, or he can even have the best time in his life. And the process of finding a girlfiriend/boyfriend or having a job or going to education is also stressful. 95% of those people are either members of the middle or lower class.

I have just recently read that scientists are pretty close to detecting which brain functions turns a normal person into a murdering psychopath and how to stop it. I have this comfy chair and my laptop because many people worked hard to make them in a factory. Even more people worked in mines to dig up the materials for them. Sure, they all were paid(I hope) more or less for what they did, but they all contributed."

Here I explained some reasons why I love humans. You may disagree with me, that is within your freedom. But those are the reasons why I think we should fight any opressors of human rights and any opressors of freedom. That is also why we should help feed the poor and why we should support the poor lower classes. Those are the reasons why we should fight for peace and a more free and simultaneusly equal world. Those are the reasons why we should fight not for a utopia, but for a better real world. But we must also never feel fear because trough fear they control us.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Basically, the european radical right is actually helping ISIS goals. What is their goal? ISIS goal is to create a WWIII between the muslims and the rest.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To understand that we must know 3 facts:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1) What we have today is not the largest migration ever. It is quite large, but ever since the Roman empire and the Huns we have had so many large migrations inside of europe that it is impossible to count all of them.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2) Nobody in history ever has been able to stop migrations. Ever. People even manage to migrate in and out of North Korea.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3) ISIS wants you to hate muslims.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now, I don't want to protect Islam in any way. Islam is a backwards religion, just like well almost any religion.(In fact the concept of religion itself is backwards)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Why does ISIS want you to hate muslims?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well it is the same old cycle of hatred concept. Remember that the goal of ISIS is WWIII?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 1 of their plan is to cause terror. This will create a fear of muslims, and that same fear will create hate. They are trying to radicalise Europe into a muslim hating fascist state. So far unfortunately they have had some success, especially in some eastern/central european countries.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 2 of their plan is that European radical rightists start attacking muslims in their own countries. This will then radicalise those muslims. It will make terrorists out of moderate muslims and further reinforce step 1. Mistreated muslims and immigrants will become militant. It is easy to recruit a muslim who was mistreated by european nationalists into terrorist organisations. They will spread the news of what is happenning to the middle east too.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 3 is to use the news of what is happening in Europe to further radicalise any moderate muslims that exist in the middle east. The goals of steps 1-3 is to create two opposing sides, two armies of people that hate each other.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 4 is war.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So really, while the radical right is thinking they are fighting ISIS, they are really actually helping them, because ISIS actually anticipated their reaction.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What do I want you to learn from this? Well just a few things:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">-Fear is the mind killer. By allowing yourself to feel fear you are allowing people to control you.

Why are radical feminists and radical SJW's a problem of the modern left, not a solution?

Before I commence, yes I am definitely a leftie. At least I identify as one. However, lately, there is a rift opening on the left.

To think about this question, we should first think of what the political left really is? What is the modern political left? What are its values? And what are its goals? We also need to know what are the goals of radical feminists and radical SJW's("Social Justice Warriors") and what exactly are they.

The political left can be most widely defined as a movement of people who aspire to bring untraditional philosophies and values to their society. The political right on the opposite wants to keep the traditional values or bring them back.

In modern times it means that the left is for progressivism. This usually includes economic ideas like Liberalism, Social democracy, Socialism, Anarchism. It also includes cultural ideas like Egalitarianism(equal rights for everyone), Multiculturalism, political correctness (a.k.a. social justice), Pacifism, Environmentalism, civil rights movements and feminism. And Liberalism and Anarchism can be described as both economic and cultural ideas. So yes individual freedom is a key component of leftism.

By now you could have concluded that feminism and SJW's belong to the left. While that is certainly true, I personally believe that modern feminist and SJW movements do more harm than good to leftism. But in a way also, recently they are starting to belong less and less to the left. Why is that so?

Well, there are at least 2 reasons. The first one is the fact that popularity is very important in politics. Even in non-democratic systems once you reach a certain point of unpopularity you are going to have an uprising. Feminists and SJW's, the way most of them act on the internet is like a victim. While that is fine, a radical core among them has formed. That core isn't just fighting for equality. That core is trying to switch from being the victim to being the aggresor. And the wider public has recognised this. As a follow up the wider public is also often thinking about the rest of leftism like that. And since popularity is so important in politics it translates as a problem. Radical feminists and SJW's are acting increasingly like some kind of mini dictators, and the wider public is not receiving it well. They want tolerance but they are not prepared to give it back.

The second one, and the reason why those 2 movements are getting increasingly distant from the left is the fact that those movements are more and more starting to act like single issue politics. Single issue politics are fine, but only as long as they affect only that single issue. Feminists and SJW's while they stress their one single issue, they are trying to affect a much wider area of politics indirectly. Their approach on other leftist ideals has shifted from friendly to 'laissez faire'. If you ask a feminist or SJW about the importance of personal freedoms he will probably say something like he likes it as long as it does not cross their beliefs of social justice or feminism. While that is certainly fine, as soon as you read their blogs you will soon notice that they never advocate personal freedoms and that other leftist ideas are something that they often stomp on. In fact they often act as irrationally as some traditionalists except that feminism and social justice has become their tradition. So while they are on the left, they have become quite irrational, a decade ago the main argument for the political left against the political right was that the right is too irrational. Radical feminism and SJW's are like a political right that has grown inside the political left.

So while as a leftist I believe that their issues and concerns are valid, they resemble Stalin a lot(in a very negative way), the funny thing is that although Stalin was a communist his regime had elements of rightism. Their approach to solving their issues is terrible. With the way they think they have become the same close minded monsters that leftists despise. Plus they often sound very much like '1st world problems'.

So what approaches can the left take to fix this?

Well, there are only long term approaches IMHO. So think in decades not in years.

One approach would be an approach of re-education. Leftists should approach them, tell them that they understand their issues, but that there are other issues that are just as important if not more important than that, like personal freedoms, general progressivism and other leftist ideas. I like this approach the most. I like it because ultimately there is no problem with teir ideals, but there is a big problem on how tthey approach those same ideals.

A second approach would be to adapt to them. Of course, this is my least favourite approach, because that would mean the abandonment of the ideals of personal freedoms andthe abandonment os some other leftist ideas. It would also mean becoming increasingly authoritarian. Liberalism would become a completely rightist thing. Also it would mean that the political left would become increasingly irrational and emotional, where until now it was a cool-headed and rational political ideology, fighting for the little man.

A third approach would be to marginalise them. Which would mean to do to them what they are doing to the rest of the left, not abandon their ideals completely, but to consider them less important.

A fourth approach would be to cut ties and go against them in discussions and trying to prove them wrong. Cut ties with them and let them become the single issue politics that they want to be or 'pass the hot potato' by letting them go full right. I don't like this approach at all, because it would mean making enemies out of them. Plus it would mean the abandonment of many leftist ideas. But at least we would be rid of the dead weight.

And there are probably countless other approaches.

Now, does this mean that the left is weak? Absolutely not. Such infighting happens regularly both on the left and right of the political spectrum. It means that both set of ideals are evolving and becoming stronger. It means that the very thing that the left likes which is change, is currently happening on the left. Eventually, something will be done and all of this will just become a part of history.

What is your opinion on the matter.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have decided to analyze what is faster in terms of actual speed of use, the GUI or CLI? In this post I will describe my process, and I will display the results of the various scenarios. All the scenarios describe on how a user would update the software on his computer.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Important:In this test I did not measure the speed of the actual software. What I measured was the total time of how many seconds did the user have to interact(user actions) with his computer to complete the desired goal while using the GUI or the CLI. In other words I am not measuring the speed of the software but the speed of the usage of said software. That is we are measuring the speed of the hand movements and similar(which can cause the carpal tunnel syndrome).
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

The method
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have used the KLM(Keystroke-level model), it is a method that tries to predict on how long will it take a user to accomplish a routine task while using an interactive computer system. This method assumes that the user knows how to do the taks in question, and it also assumes that in the measured scenario no errors were made by the user.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Keystroke-level model

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also should mention that although I have used Ubuntu 15.04(Unity) as my reference operating system, I consider that my results are usable on most modern operating systems, because the process of updating the software is very similar with 2-3 common steps:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1)Search for updates
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2)User authentication
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3)Install the updates

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The goal of my measurement was to be system agnostic, so I have simply assumed that the system response time = 0.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some scenarios however cleverly automate 1), which is perfectly ok for the purposes of this test.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As for the KLM, I have used 4 of its six operators in my scenarios:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">K - Keystroke or mouse button press-I have assumed that the user is an average skilled typist - 1K = 0.2s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">P - Pointing to a target with a mouse - 1P = 1.1s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">H - Switching your second hand from the keyboard to the mouse and vice versa - 1H = 0.4s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">M - The mental preparation for the execution of physical actions - 1M = 1.35s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have ignored the D operator because I did not use them in the scenario and I have ignored the R operator because this measurement was system agnostic so the system response time was just assumed as 0, as that is not what I intended to measure. The length in seconds for each operation was scientifically established by monitoring many users of different skill levels.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Each of the operators(K, P, H, M) represents one single user action.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In total I have measured 5 scenarios. Each of the 5 scenarios was first broken down to several steps which were then separately measured by the KLM method. When analyzing the steps I will not describe every single user action, instead I will just write down the neccesary operators and the resulting time.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the GUI scenarios the user starts with an empty desktop with no windows open. The user in those scenarios is using both the keyboard and mouse. In the CLI scenarios the user starts with an empty terminal. In those scenarios on the other hand the user only uses the keyboard. In all of the scenarios the user starts with both his hands on the keyboard. At the begining of each scenario there is one 'M' operation.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The scenarios are:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">GUI - The user has to find the software update dialogue. He also has to check for the updates,authenticate and install them.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">CLI - The user has to manually search for updates, authenticate and update his system via the CLI.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">GUI - The user gets a 'notification' which leads him to the software update dialogue. The user has to click on the icon, authenticate and install the updates.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">CLI - The user has to update his system via a script file. He has to start the script, authenticate and approve the updates.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">CLI + i3wm GUI - the peculiarity of the i3wm GUI is that it promotes keyboard only usage. This scenario acually uses the CLI and the same script from scenario 4. The i3wm GUI however is only used for launching the CLI terminal with the script preloaded onto the terminal. Everything else is pure CLI.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The actual measurements

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">1)The 'long' GUI scenario

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">In this scenario the user has to first do 'menu hunting' until he finds the neccessary system update dialogue box. Then he has to authenticate and search for the updates. After that the user ends his actions by pressing the install updates button.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Here are the steps that I have used to separate everything into smaller chunks:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Searching for the 'software update dialogue'(typing in 'update' into the search box): H+M+6K=2.95s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Activating the 'update software dialogue'(running it): H+M+P+K=3.05s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Searching for the updates: M+P+K=2.65s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Authenticating(8 letter password + shift + enter): P+11K+H+M=5.05s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"> Installing the updates: H+M+P+K=3.05s

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">2)The 'manual' CLI scenario

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">In this scenario the user has to completely manually input the neccessary CLI commands in order to update his software. The commands used were 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get upgrade'

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Here are the steps:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Well we have learned that the above picture depicts the truth. However there are other things that we have learned as well...

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Is the CLI faster in usage?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Definitely. But I will admit that it is a few seconds slower than I expected it to be.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">What about those nifty 'Tiling WM's?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Those are also awesomely fast, however in the workflow their nature is closer to being extensions to the CLI. Had we avoided to use the CLI, then we would have had to go trough the same 'menu hunting' process as we did with the traditional GUI(Unity) and that would cost us a lot of speed.
Does that mean that the CLI is superior to the GUI?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Absolutely not. It only means it is faster in usage. Plus there are many other scenarios to test. For some situations and users it is better to use the CLI, for others it is better to use the GUI.
Ok, but what are the advantages of the GUI then?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Intuitiveness and interactiveness. The GUI uses our 'intuitive knowledge' to make it easier to use computers. I.e. you can take apiece of paper, grab it and throw it into the trash can. The same way you can take an icon, grab it and throw it into the trash can. The CLI on the other hand is a lot like 'casting spells' you have to learn the commands and tell them to the computer. 'rm -rf' is very similar to 'Avada Kedavra' :P
Oh and another thing... Notice how the scenarios with 3 steps are faster than the scenarios with 4 and 6 steps...

In the future

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"> Further research should be done:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">1)Further research should be done on many other scenarios

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">2)UX designers should try to decrease the number of steps neccessary to complete scenarios.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">3)UX designers should implement more keyboard shortcuts for its software even when it is not marketed only towards experienced users.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">4)When designing GUI's for advanced users, UX designers should try to integrate the CLI into the GUI. A good example would be how the file manager named 'Dolphin' has a CLI extension(picture below):

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
5)Tiling WM's are nice and they are something that should be looked into.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">6)The strength of the GUI is in its intuitivity. However when it comes to doing more with less the CLI has the advantage. That means that the GUI world must not stagnate, in order to start doing more with less UX designers must do 'wild exerimentation'.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">7)Where are NUI's in this whole mess?Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955978306612346826.post-24767661930638886822015-11-23T11:26:00.000+00:002015-11-23T11:54:19.074+00:00Multiculturalism and why I love it.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Phew, this will be my first blog post that is not related to technology this year. I have gone 11 months without writing about anything that is not related to technology.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Well... What I want to write about is why I am such a big fan of multiculturalism. To talk about multiculturalism first we need to define what exactly it is:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Multiculturalism describes the existence, acceptance, or promotion of multiple cultural traditions within a single jurisdiction, usually considered in terms of the culture associated with an ethnic group. This can happen when a jurisdiction is created or expanded by amalgamating areas with two or more different cultures (e.g. French Canada and English Canada) or through immigration from different jurisdictions around the world (e.g. Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, United States, United Kingdom, and many other countries).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Multicultural ideologies and policies vary widely, ranging from the advocacy of equal respect to the various cultures in a society, to a policy of promoting the maintenance of cultural diversity, to policies in which people of various ethnic and religious groups are addressed by the authorities as defined by the group to which they belong. - From Wikipedia-multiculturalism

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I would just add one more thing, multiculturalism is a goal, not a means or a process. This is not a discussion on how well multiculturalism currently functions in place XY. In recent events it certainly takes a lot of strong will to keep your hope in humanity and the idea of multiculturalism.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I think that the best way to explain on why I like multiculturalism is to mention some of the opposites of multiculturalism. So, what do we have at the opposite side of multiculturalism:
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">-prejudice, intolerance, inhumanity, brutality, isolationism, misunderstanding, wars, authoritarianism, big brother, dictatorships and ultimately all of that leads to nazism. And that is only just among other things.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Also the argument that some cultures are superior to or more valuable than others is moot. Firstly it is very subjective on which culture is superior. Secondly, sure the west might be superior in some ways to other cultures but only at this moment. 1000 years ago for instance the Islamic world was more progressive both culturally and technologically, there was tolerance to atheists, different religions and tolerance to different cultures. Meanwhile in Europe at that time we had forced baptizing, an all out war against heretics and everyone who was "different". It was a culture of violence back then. What happened to islam is that all the bad things that I have mentioned in the paragraph above had take over. So, you can't guarantee that western culture will be 'superior' in 100 years. Furthermore if we let the bad things take over we might become just like modern islamic culture, defensive, stuck in our ancient ways and aggressive.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">But that is enough about the negatives, let's talk about the positives.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Multiculturalism promotes peace. Let us look at the example of Europe. Before WWII, Europe was the continent that was the most riddled with wars and with intercultural hate and misunderstanding. After WWII the people in Europe(myself included) and their leaders have finally learned their lesson and they decided that they must do something to stop the wars in Europe. So they decided to form the European union, with multiculturalist policies at its heart. As a result Europe became maybe even the most peaceful continent of modern civilisation.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Another very important and my favourite reason on why I like multiculturalism is that multiculturalism 'expands' my perception of the real world. I.e. if you were born in the English speaking world, you probably know English. And you know your way with people in the English speaking world. Everything else is actually pretty closed for you. However, I who also know German, I also know my way around the German speaking world. I can go to Berlin as a tourist and enjoy everything that Germans do. I can read German newspapapers, I can read German web sites. I can go to German forums and take part in flame wars on German. I can even make German friends, easier than to force them to speak English. I even took part in a beginner class of Japanese, though my Japanese skills are still not that good.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The conclusion about multiculturalism is that you should think long term. Very long term. You should think in decades and centuries. You should also think about, how could we ever reach the famous "star trek society".

Hello everyone.

This time I will write about the Q&A that happened on the 6th.October 2015. This miniseries will be overviewing the regular weekly Q & A's held by the Canonical community team. I don't promise to do this miniseries regularly because of my own time constrictions. I also will not write about every question that was asked, I will only write about questions and answers which I consider interesting. And I will only indirectly report what was asked and how it was answered. You can find those details in the video of the sessions themselves. I will however put a link to the videos(if I forgot the link, please tell me so in the comments). So let's start with the first question.

Yes Canonical is trying to get awareness of Ubuntu. In the past there were commercials on billboards, commercials on airports. And they are working with partners that are pre-installing Ubuntu, like Dell and Lenovo. Commercials on TV are extremely expensive though.Right now they are trying to get the phone out there first.

They completely agree with the question. They never understood why we can install any OS on a phone or a desktop while we can not do the same on a phone. They can do the same thing but the user is forced to use the one OS with which the device came with, if he goes to great lengths the user can maybe substitute it with another version of the same operating system.But I can't install Ubuntu on a random phone. Some devices are even locked down. It would be nice to have, and finally something like that is coming, ARM is making such a standard specification.But as long as the manufacturer modifies its OS, interests are colliding. Similar situations were also with PC's and laptops and there it was escalated to the regulatory agencies in order to force everybody to stop trying to build monopolies, maybe that is necessary for phones as well.

It is a big problem.It will have to be done eventually. It is very hard to do right.

This post might be the last post I am doing on this miniseries. Well, probably not the last, but I don't want to do it for every Q&A session from now on. I might do it again sometimes but that is it. One of the resons for this is that the viewership has dropped rapidly. The first post in this series had almost 2000 views in its first two weeks. The last post in this series before this one did barely even reach 200. A more important reason is that I want to reroute my time and effort to something else,still mostly Linux related stuff, like this for example:

So, on January 2013, I tried to create my own anime oriented Linux distro, I was however a noob with just 2 years of Linux experience and no barely enough CLI knowledge to 'cd' and 'apt-get'. That what I made was nothing more than Ubuntu 12.04(or 12.10 was it?) and some preinstalled software like a mass renamer for anime episodes, vlc and some other software. And it was made with UCK and the help of similar tools.

UCK:

http://www.linuxvoice.com/build-your-own-linux-distro/

Now I am willing to maybe give it another go, just for funzies. And yeah, I did get some skills since then.

I don't want to give you an answer directly about what exactly my distro will be, because as you can see if you read it down furrther, I still have questions myself.

So let's talk about some of the ideas I have.

I will definitely again use the help of tools like UCK, except this time I will delve in much deeper.

For my base I want to either use Ubuntu or Debian. I am kind of leaning more to Ubuntu, because Ubuntu does have sane defaults(and if we go the 'user friendly route' then definitely Ubuntu), plus if it ever succeeds and becomes my brak off success hobby project(yeah Linus I am looking at you :=P )it might become an official flavour in the long run(hey, a guy can dream right :P ?).

If I pick Debian I will definitely use the netinstall image. Also I don't want to leave it unprotected, however I do not want to use the NSA backed SELinux, or the omnipresent AppArmor. I will try Tomoyo, because I do like the security trough obscurity concept.

If I pick Ubuntu I will also probably try any kind of minimal image, but I will also consider the Unity image except I will remove Unity from that image. I will do that If I want to have the GUI application software that comes by default with Unity (LO, the unity control center, network manager).

But what GUI will you use?

I am 95% sure that I wan't to have i3wm there somewhere.

But what does i3wm bring to the usermean to the user, with heavy keyboard usage, ultra high on customisation and even less resource usage than LXDE. It will also mean debloating, although Ubuntu is definitely not bloated, it should just come closer to actual minimalism. A caveat however is that i3wm is not one of the most user friendly interfaces.

Ok, but what about that 'user friendly route'?

If I go that way I will very probably make 2 distros, one with i3 and another one with probably KDE,Unity or LXDE.

What file manager?

I still have no idea. I need to do research on that one. But if I don't find anything better then probably Dolphin. Nautilus activates too many background services and screws up i3wm while launching(by default at least, maybe I could even tame it). Pcmanfm however is too barebones in my opinion. I do want to have automounting and a working search index in the file manager, which Dolphin does have even if it is buggy on i3wm.

What web browser?

Probably not one of the mainstream ones. Maybe Otter browser?

Ok but what about the 'flavour' of the distro?

I am once again thinking about 2 routes:

"i3buntu"- basically a flavour of Ubuntu or Debian with i3wm, modified as I have described before.

"something something anime Linux"- The same like before except anime themed. Anime themed or related or useful software preinstalled. The "user friendly route" is actually a subroute of this route. I will probably also preinstall it with renpy based Visual novels. And maybe steam.

Sounds fun, so may I help?

Of course. Contact me here or on my email: bluedragonsoft@yahoo.com

What I really do need help for is if you can do Debian packaging for some of my own software and some other tarballs. Because dependency hunting while packaging is something that reminds me of vomiting.

If you can't help with that but can help with something else you are still free to contact me

But isn't there already something like an 'Anime distro'?

Yes there is:

https://animesoft.wordpress.com/mangaka/

And it looks great. I reccomend you to try those before I finish my first alpha.

However I still want to try my idea for the following reasons:

-Mangaka is based of the LTS release of Ubuntu. Which is not bad in itself, but I want mine to be based of the curent release.

-Mangaka does not have a i3wm version

-I want to do it to further my own knowledge of Linux and for fun.

But I would consider mergin my i3wm version with them when I get something workable.

So what next?

My first order of business is to install the tools I want and need and then get my desired image.

My second order of business is to uninstall Unity (either 15.04 or 15.10 if the bug with AMD drivers gets fixed soon enough), install i3wm and test if the image works.
My third order of business if everything is successful is to reprioritise on what I as a person am doing to make enough space and time to work on this.

Just like Linux Torvalds suggested in one of his famous quotes, I plan to start small. This is a hobby project for me.

Hello everyone.

This time I will write about the Q&A that happened two weeks ago.

13:14 Who is the guest today?

Nobody.

13:34 What happened to the Meizu MX4?

It will probably come back. It was sold out.

15:37 What about making CChromium the default Ubuntu browser instead of Firefox?

It will not happen in 15.10. Perhaps in 16.04. If you have arguments then bring them out in the mailing list.We shall also talk about the Ubuntu browser or any other browser. It is good to have that discussion regularly.

19:30 Would Popey and Michael describe themselves as free software advocates, where is the line between transparency and convenience?

Popey is a pragmatic FSF advocate but he also does use proprietary software. He admits he is one but he is a bad one. Michael is kind of the same. He uses Linux exclusively and uses OSS whenever it is an option, but he is not an idealist, i.e. he uses Chrome instead of Firefox. However when he has the option even if it is a bit of an inconvenience he will still ose OSS

22:00 is the 25000 Ubuntu phones sold estimate correct?

They don't have the information. Probably a good estimate. It is better to look at the number of Ubuntu desktops. 5 Years ago that was 20000000 installations. Right now those numbers are not important for them as a company. They are currently building an enthusiast product. Right now they are only trying to break even in profit, and they are doing that. It is more important that the OEM's want to continue carry on making phones and that has happened with BQ so far.

Compare it to Android and iOS, it is interesting how the mindset is different with Ubuntu. You can run rc-proposed if you want. The target is actually 6 weeks, not 2 months and they think that is alright. You are welcome to help fix some of the bugs.

Yes. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello everyone.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have decided to start a new miniseries on this blog.

Note:If you have any questions yourself, after reading this, please don't ask me, instead join the Q&A sessions which happen every Tuesday on 15:00(UTC) on http://ubuntuonair.com/

13:17 What is the release date for OnePlus2 with Ubuntu?
It is a community project, There is an announcement on the OnePlus forum. It is great to see such ports.

14:40 When developing for Ubuntu phone, can I test it on my desktop always?If I test my phone app on the desktop assuming that the phone app does not use any desktop specific hardware, and it does not work because the compenents are not in willy or are in older versions then are in older versions, instead of buckling the SDK because it should work, because testing on the desktop is not a target and if it works it is just lucky.
Their approach is to make the emulator a great tool, however you can always test it on the desktop. With convergence and unity8 on desktop this will become even better. The SDK guys are thinking about more advanced virtualization. The problem is that the desktop and target frameworks are not matching up. With convergence it should help. It remains an issue. Sensors however will just not be supported if you don't have the hardware. The API is there but there is no device to talk to.

16:35 Are there any updates on the convergent BQ phone?
Nothing official he can say yet, they do want to have it next year.

17:40 We have heard a lot about upcoming messaging frameworks and syncing frameworks, can you tell us what is to be expected, and when will they become available for developers?
That is a long term effort over the next year, they are building it on top of empathy and other existing building blocks. They are adding api's on that.

19:40 What is your daily driver phone?
The Meizu MX4, he prefers the nexus 4 though. He has also tried the BQ.

20:26 In the demos you see a small representation of the big screen on the small screen. Will that change by giving us a keyboard on the phone?
The question is what you do with the phones screen. It would be nice to have such a keyboard, there will be some kind of keyboard application.

21:31 Is there any possible hint of standard applications like whatsapp on Ubuntu?
It is a chicken and egg problem. Once they will be able to work with larger providers they will come. Textsecure is getting ready to launch on Ubuntu.

23:00 Is there any plans for in app payments?
They are working on it at this moment. They are using an interesting API that is almost ready to be released. It is a question of back-ends as well. QT has opensourced its purchasing stuff.

25:00 What is the biggest surprise and dissapointment in the years of phone development?
He is surprised at how fast it was until they made their first working prototypes. It was dissapointing how they did not release more mobile or tablet products last year.

28:40 There was something called Ubuntu brainstorm, but it was discontinued, anything as an alternative?
The best thing would probably be the mailing list. Ubuntu brainstomr was too much to maintain. Or the IRC would be good as well.

31:10 Are there any plans to upgrade the Android base?
There are. The devices will also have to switch. The only bits of Android they still use is the kernel version and device drivers.

33:10 Will you be able to use the phones in big picture mode?
They don't know yet. It will depend on what people will want.

34:00 How long is Ubuntu supported on Phones and how often is it updated,phone makers usually have bad software support?
The intention is to be supported for several years, certainly much better than Android, they are updating every 6 weeks for every device. Probably not as long as 5 years though.

35:26 What is your idea of a pure Ubuntu phone,without the Android bits?
The barrier is that the vendors have to implemnent drivers for native Linux. The vendors do not want to implement twice.

39:00 Any idea on the number of people purchasing the phones and how many developers are there?
There was almost a thousand developers only on the store. There are more outside the store. The number of users is somewhere in thethousands or more.

40:28 Will the convergence phone be able to run Inkscape?
Yes it will but probably not in the first generation.
Those applications will not have to be reworked, just properly installed and packaged.

41:37 What is the minimum limit for paid applications in the store, why is it not 99 cents?
The limit is 1.99. The limit is there because it is reasonable for processing ad making sure that everyone gets some money.

42:47 Is now the right time to crowdfound a Ubuntu tablet?
It is pretty soon, but they would like to see one. You may want to wait until they first get one commercial partner.

43:40 What are the plants to solve the chicken and egg problem?
To get a bigger market share and work with bigger partners. The approach so far was to purposefully target enthusiasts. It will happen with time.

45:25 I am using Ubuntu since march, will we be able to change the background on a phone?
Initially they wanted it but now they disabled it for UI consitency. Scopes might be able to help in here.

46:32 Androidhow, Why did they move from cyanogenmod to AOSP?(I am not sure I have heard that question correctly)
It probably had to do with the devices that they wanted to support back then. All the images come from AOSP now.

47:35 when using a TV as a display, will it always switch to desktop mode or can you choose the phone UI on the TV screen?
Right now not, but if the use case will be popular enough, why not.

48:20 was there work on running Android applications on Ubuntu?
It is pretty difficult to do well. They have a very different UI and lifecycle model. They do not want peopl to write Applications on Android and then making them run on Ubuntu trough a bad compatibility layer as a second rate platform. They wnat Ubuntu to be a primary platform with good native applications.
Also,see here:

54:07 Microsoft is working on convergence as well, any hope of being able to port ubuntu on their phones as well so the hardware convergence is already built in?
They are currently relying on hardware dupport from the Android implementations, so they don't know how that would work. It would be a lot of work. On WP boot loaders are locked.

55:00 Are we going to win the convergence race?
They have been talking about it for a long time and they are ready to realise it. Because of the design patterns it will hopefully work well.

56:00 Will the scopes be rotateable and will the nexus 5 be officially supported?
Scopes will be improved a lot soon. There is no plan to officially support the nexus 5. Now they have their own device partners.

57:21 Any new applications in the works that other phones can not do, other than scopes?Any killer app?
They don't think so. Good convergence is the killer app they are working on right now.

57:50 How is the intense work on the software side going with the efficient use of the hardware, battery drain is the point where other phones struggle right now?
They had battery issues in the past but now on the BQ phones they have better battery life now than the Android BQ phones have.

Try otter browser:
http://otter-browser.org/
It promises to be everything that old opera was, so a bit similar to Vivaldi, except, Otter browser is open source!

Ever
since Opera shifted to version 15, I just can not find a browser that I
consider irreplaceable. Because Opera versions 15-25 did not support
Linux I was forced to switch. My choice at that time was Chromium, and
it was generally ok, it loaded web pages pretty fast and youtube just
worked. But it lacks some serious features, plus most of the interface
elements are not made for the widescreen era. And it eats RAM.

However
as soon as Opera 26 with linux support entered Opera's Alpha channels I
switched back to Opera. At first I liked it, but the more I used it, it
felt like Chromium with gimmicks. And it started to feel unclean to use
a non-open source browser on an open source operating system. I do
however watch Opera's blog and I admit that the latest versions are more
than Chromium with gimmicks, if only it were open source.

So I
gave Firefox a chance, which I still use to this day. I like it because
it is more feature rich than current Opera or Chromium. However some
websites, including Youtube, just don't like Firefox anymore. And
Firefox actually tends to eat my CPU.

Since Vivaldi is not open
source, using Vivaldi is out of the question. I have also tried using
several smaller browsers like Arora(I loved it back in 2011,but now it
is outdated), Epiphany, Midori, Konqueror(I wanted to try KHTML as an
alternative to Webkit)...But most of them had either even less features
than Chromium or they were hated by websites.(Konqueror does seem like
an interesting File browser/Web browser hybrid however).

However,then
I have stumbled upon Otter browser by accident when I saw a comment
about it on Opera's blog. And after a few versions of it, Otter browser
looks like a glimmer of light. It is rapidly gaining features every 1-2
weeks. It promises to bring most of old Opera 12.16 features. It is open
source and has a repository on github. The only feature missing for me
to move to it as my main browser is an https everywhere option. Plus it
has a Youtube bug, but due to the youth of the project I am willing to
overlook it. Oh yeah and although I am a Linux user, Otter is one of the very few browsers that still support *BSD!Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955978306612346826.post-62660705367998563462015-08-31T22:11:00.004+01:002015-08-31T22:17:54.924+01:00Ubuntu Q&A 25.08.2015.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello everyone.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I
have decided to start a new miniseries on this blog. This is the third
post I am making inside of this series and this time I will write about
the Q&A that happened last week. This miniseries
will be overviewing the regular weekly Q & A's held by the Canonical
community team. I don't promise to do this miniseries regularly because
of my own time constrictions. I also will not write about every
question that was asked, I will only write about questions and answers
which I consider interesting. And I will only indirectly report what was
asked and how it was answered. You can find those details in the video
of the sessions themselves. I will however put a link to the videos(if I
forgot the link, please tell me so in the comments). So let's start
with the first question.
Also due to circumstances, this time I was not able to find the exact time in the video wen the question was asked.

Note:If you have any questions
yourself, after reading this, please don't ask me, instead join the
Q&A sessions which happen every Tuesday on 15:00(UTC) on http://ubuntuonair.com/

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Due to my other duties I will be unable to make a blog post for at least 2 weeks, so I will miss the next two Q&A's.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What was the problem with the delay of the recent OTA6?
We target about every 6 weeks but we are not strict on that, so if some important fixes pop up they will delay it.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Does canonical have a problem with integrating bountiesource into launchpad?
Launchpad development has become very active lately, git support and commit hooks were added, so you can propose your suggestion to launchpad developers.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Will unity8 support 4k resolutions?
Yes, all of the new elements are entirely scalable. Everything with grid units will work fine. Legacy apps however could be a problem.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Will Libre office be fully integrated into Ubuntu phone?
Yes and no, Libreoffice provides a small LibreOffice kit library, which will be used in the new LO viewer on Ubuntu phone. However the full LO suite will be supported in desktop mode.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Is LXD at a usable state for home users?
Certainly it is stable enough for home users who don't have anything mission critical, however there is no stable LTS release yet.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Will dekko support exchange?
Ask the Dekko developers, not soon, dekko is built on top of the trojita email app which is strongly imap based, they might however add pop 3 support. The better question is why does Exchange not support imap?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
What is happening with the software center,will the desktop and phone use the same service?
Eventually everything will be using the snappy store, except the deb desktop. The store is not going away
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Will the phone be updated to 15.10?
Originally not, but lately there were signs that it might be updated.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Why is landcape the default orientation on large touchscreens?
Mostly because they want people to use both portrait and landscape.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
How different is mir from wayland technically speaking?
Not very. Wayland is designed around a standard protocol. Mir was designed to not make you care about the protocol. It separates Mir from the interface. Both mir and Wayland use the same api for drivers.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
When will the new thin line header land?
It has probably already landed.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Will another tablet be supported in the future?
As soon as an OEM comes along.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Is there any plan to integrate the stupendously hot charmander concept?
Someone from the community is doing it, there is a lot that would have to be reworked to implement it. He should work with the design team.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When reading the API documentation what does "obsolete member" mean?
It meanss that part is being deprecated.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Will the convergence phone create a black-hole that will suck in my pet dog, called Rodney?
The convergence phone is a dog person.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
There was something on Softpedia about switching to Android as base (idk the technical details) to support android apps. Is this being discussed at Canonical?
Look here:
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">http://thebluedrag.blogspot.com/2015/07/ubuntu-phoneandroid-app-support-is.html
We do not want to be Android copycats. Our goal is to make Ubuntu apps easy to write. The alternative is to become a second rate platform for Android applications and that is a secon rate Android platform. Plus has any platform that has Android application support ever been succesful enough to get a decent market share on the global worldwide market?(No it has not)
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
What feature in an app or the platform are you most looking forward to as we start converging?
Dekko on the desktop. All those applications on the desktop. He is also looking forward to content hub on the desktop.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Any secret innovations being worked on for the phone?
Pretty much everything is in the open.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
When will we be able to package snaps from the SDK?
As soon as snaps become functional enough to replace click.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Is there a move to improve scopes i.e. to show content from youtube inside the scope?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, they are working on it, it might even be in OTA6. They are working with gstreamer to get the videos into the scopes.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
When will the Ubuntu SDK be repackaged into a snap so that we can develop from Ubuntu Personal?
Soon, it is one of the target apps.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
With content hub and all that sandboxing, how does one make a file manager on Snappy/Click?
The file manager is an exception so the file manager and terminal are the exceptions outside the confinement.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Is there a page for new developers who want to help with cloud/server and a list of issues they can work on?
Not, there is not a formal program for that yet, ping the ubuntu engineers for what you are interested in.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
What are charms?
Sets of code that execute in clouds to coordinate services with each other
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What do you think of Canonical's extensive use of google's services for storing potentially confidential business information, eg in google drive, when they are now a direct competitor with Android vs Ubuntu? If a viable LibreOffice online cloud alternative existed would you prefer Canonical to move to such a service?
The engineers said that they preferred online services, however he did admit there were some concerns with them. They have said that they have contractual arrangements with them and that there is no spying going on. They also mentioned that they do understand the concerns.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When is the expected release of the 'Convergent' Ubuntu Phone ? i.e. if not specific date - what month ?
This year
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What is the safest way to install debs on Ubuntu Phone?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Create a chroot on the phone and chroot into that.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have a raspberry pi 2, is there already something available to install something like Ubuntu Next and a media server like Kodi on it ?
It is kind of difficult. But it would be nice to have a Kodi only image.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Is there a planned optimisation of Ubuntu phone for the Nexus 5?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">That is a community maintained port.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Will we be able to make phone calls and SMS from the terminal? A use case for this would be i.e. your phone is docked to a screen and keyboard, and you are already working on your keyboard in a terminal but noy you need to make a phone call.
This already works, we just need to find out how, you can find it in the source code for the dialer app, it is a niche use case, it would be cool though, especially with ascii art.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What is the status of the Dekko Email client? Is it being moved into the core? Also, what is the best way to get involved in helping with testing? My email is self hosted so the webapps are not of much help.
Jump into the irc and ask, there is a plan for dekko to become the default email client, it is mostly there.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So this time around there were not many questions. Anyways here is the link to the video. The questions will start only after 10-20 minutes.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">15:00 When is ubuntu phone arriving in India?
Soon, BQ will launch there in about 2 weeks.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">15:40 When ubuntu phone is supposed to be shipped worldwide, including the usa, that has limited bandwidth to choose from, how is it going to play with the duopoly of At&t and Verizon?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">BQ will function in a way that it will not work with the fastest network, so it will be a bit limited. BQ is already shipping to many countries outside europe, You just have to make sure that your carrier supports 900mhz, 2100mhz and hspa+ mobile signals.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">19:00 Is the Ubuntu phone still on road to full convergence where you hook up a keyboard or a mouse to it?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, definitely, there were many demos, right now they have a walking desktop, major improvements will come in the next month.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">21:05 If I bought David ice cream, would I get the content hub documentation sooner?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, there are content hub tutorials being worked on, they will come quite soon, hopefully in a few weeks.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">25:15 What is Canonicals plan to monetize Ubuntu on the desktop?
Canonical provides a lot of enterprise support, they also provide a lot of training and maintenance to paying customers. They also give custom engineering services and they get some money from affiliations.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">35:00 with the way snappy separates the system and applications, is something like tripwire still important for file system integrity?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">With snappy you should be relatively certain that your file system has not been tampered with. Whatever you install on the phone, it should not be able to modify anything else on the phone(if you got it trough the official store).
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">38:00 How many supplies of ice cream do I need to get scopes in javascript officially supported?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The engineers have said that there is already a project like that with it's own ppa and clcik packages for it. However the project is still too young for official support, but hopeflly official support will come soon.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> 40:00 Will we be able to install Ubuntu phone on non-Ubuntu phones?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There exists a porting guide. For some devices it was already done. It can be either easy or difficult depending on the device. But there are some very good ports out there( i.e for Nexus devices or the OPO).
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">44:40 Will snappy allow developers to just update pre-determined parts of the package or will the users have to download everything again?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Snappy works in a way that special libraries and modules must be shipped in the package itself, a good tool to help with this is snapcraft,. It allows you to write very concise recipes. However there are still discussions going on about decoupling with the help of hashes, but it is not implemented yet.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">47:30 There was recently a person that was unhappy that his published application in the software center was not released for 14.10 and 15.04 and that his emails were ignored for months, he is not the first to complain about this, I have been told that click and snappy will be the solution here, but snappy is not ready yet, and the deb based USC will be in 16.04 and supported for five years, if someone wants to sell software on the Ubuntu desktop what should he do until snappy is ready?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The problem with software shipped as .deb is that it needs a lot of care. Another problem is that it has root access during installation. For those and various other reasons, the queue in the USC was just piling up. Now the priorities have shifted to snappy. But there are still a number of ways to get your software into Ubuntu. One way is to put your software into the Debian archives, which has the added bonus that your software will be available for Debian as well. You can also contact employees from Canonical to get your software into Ubuntu. However those mentioned until now are only good for open source applications. A way that works for paid for applications is that you can sell and publish your .debs on your own or a third party website.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">But snaps and click are just around the corner.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">54:04 What do I do if I want to sell software on the ubuntu desktop? So the best approach ATM is 3rd party distribution, so through itch.io or the humble store?
Yes that is the best approach.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">54:30 Recently MS has launched sway as an improvement over power point, will Linux developers make ther own alternative?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They would certainly love it. It is possible to generate html5 presentations. And there exists an Inkscape plugin for that as well as smaller applications for that.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Now I have finally catched up to the latest Q&A. Expect my next blog post about this the next week. :D
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Remember, today is yet another session, so go ahead and ask your questions there.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I
have decided to start a new miniseries on this blog. This is the third
post I am making inside of this series and this time I will write about
the Q&A that happened 2 weeks ago.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> 15:25 Any news on the north American phone yet?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> They are still working on it. It is a priority.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">15:58 When can we download the Ubuntu personal ISO with an installer?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No plans yet. You can download an image onto a USB and boot from the USB already.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">18:00 Will Ubuntu touch support snapshots?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Not out of the box yet. Maybe some day.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">19:00 Will Ubuntu run windows applications without wine?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No. Can Windows run Linux applications?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
19:50 How is the power consumption when compared between Unity8 and Unity7?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Because mobiles are very resource restrained unity8 roughly needs less resources. They don't have exact data yet.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">21:00 Will the deb based Ubuntu be discontinued once Ubuntu personal gets stable?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No it won't. Even snappy is built on top of the archives which are Debian based.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">22:50 At whom is the deb based and at whom is the snappy based Ubuntu targeted at?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ubuntu-personal is for people who need their os to be less versatile, average users

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ubuntu-deb is more customizable

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">26:20 In which part of Ubuntu would you like people to be involved?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">On the phone, localisation, testing(there is a page on the wiki), core applications, feedback...

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">32:20 In Ubuntu snappy will there be anything such as libraries that you will need to build statically?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, there will be because they will have to be self contained, meaning a lot of it will have to be statically linked. But also there will be less dependency hells, if any.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">34:00 What are the new features of 15.10?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It will have updated packages. an updated Ubuntu make. And also hidpi support will be very improved

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">36:00 Can unity 8 and mir be used on the deb based ubuntu since on the phone it uses click?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, there is already an installable session for mir and unity8.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">36:45 what is the difference between unity8, next, touch?
Unity8 is the next desktop shell.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ubuntu touch is the not to be used project name for the Ubuntu phone project(Call it ubuntu phone from now on).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Desktop next was an image preview where they tried to incorporate phone technologies on the desktop and it will soon be replaced by personal.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">38:40 Gnome has been working on its own application sandbox, has there or will there be any collaboration?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Nothing has happened yet, they could have conversations with them, however their system is very different from Ubuntu's sandboxing.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> 40:45 When will Ubuntu personal land on Ubuntu phones?
Somewhere around 16.04.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">42:40 What do you think the landscape will look like for 3rd party application developers by 16.04?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They feel that it will look great because there will be so many new things. They are looking for general developers that will develop code and documentation. They also said that they already have many developers that just want to participate. They also said they want to make even better documentation and that Ubuntu make will be remade, also the SDK will be further improved. Also they have stated that Canonical is looking for engineer managers that will focus on the developer experience.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">44:50 Are workspaces planned for unity8?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They want to reach feature parity with unity7, however they don't know yet.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">45:35 On the market there are some mhl cables that connect the meizu with external screens, will that land in Ubuntu, or is there any other way to connect the phone to a screen,is there a problem or a lack of developers to do that?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They are limited by the hardware. They were so far only testing the nexus 4 with such features, so they think there are possible hardware limitations. Wifi and bluetooth have just a terrible experience with that.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">47:20 Since sdl2 is used so much for gaming, are there any plans to officially support sdl2 in the ubuntu sdk?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">An SDL template already exists on github, and there are example applications. It is though very buggy. It is possible to include it in the SDK, but then they would need to import huge chunks of SDL.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">49:25 Canonical seems to have gotten rid of Ubuntu1 just when it was most needed, are there any plans to allow phone or laptop syncing?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ubuntu1 was really bad with syncing. There are already other syncing applications in the mobile store including Dropbox.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">50:30 Is there any communication with KDE over the shashlik approach by running android applications on a real Linux, does Ubuntu consider this?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They don't even know about the technology. It is not on the roadmap yet. They do acknowledge that the Application ecosystem is vital, however they do not want to add it because they are sceptic on how the applications would integrate into the system. They also do not want to be Android copycats. Also by supporting Android applications they would demotivate people from making native Ubuntu applications.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Also look here:
http://thebluedrag.blogspot.com/2015/07/ubuntu-phoneandroid-app-support-is.html

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">53:35 Will Ubuntu 16.04 be the last Unity7 and deb based version?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No, because everything, including snappy is based on the Debian archives. Unity7 though will eventually be discontinued.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">55:24 With all the talk about the phones, where do the tablets stand right now? I.e. the Nexus 10?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Tablets are the stepping stone in their convergence vision. As for the nexus 10, they are not happy with it's GPU.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">56:30 Any hope of running snap applications on the deb system for 16.04, it would make it a lot easier for developers to target us?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Technically they could run because Snappy is a very improved Debian packaging system. And they do agree it is important for the developer experience. However Snappy is heavily reliant on sandboxing which just does not exist on the Debian based image.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">58:00 Is it possible to switch between standard and personal ubuntu from the login screen, if not will it be possible one day?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No, you will have to dual boot. However you can have both unity8 and 7 installed on the same system at the same time already.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">59:30 Should I distribute applications as snapps or debs?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It depends on your target audience. However they do consider the new application store much better than the old one.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">1:00:40 Does convergence also mean backwards compatibility with the applications already running on the ubuntu desktop, or should they be repackaged for Ubuntu phone?
It must be repackaged. They are thinking about some compatibilities, but it will have to be repackaged.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Phew, this was a long one.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And here is the video:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello everyone.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I
have decided to start a new miniseries on this blog. This is the second post I am making inside of this series and this time I will write about the Q&A that happened 3 weeks ago.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">13:44 Is there a forum or a website where members of the community can send their ideas for unity8 desktop?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Actually, yes there is: <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">https://unity.ubuntu.com/getinvolved/design/
Also the developers have said that there exist Ubuntu dedicated groups on google+ as well that you can contact most developers directly on Google+.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">15:45 What is the future of flash updates on Ubuntu?
It is a hard decision due to the many flash elements on old websites, however flash will die.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">20:27 Will the phone software store replace the software center in the future?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, but it will not happen in Unity7, meaning it will not happen very soon. However the technology for them is a bit similar.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">22:34 Will there be a tweaking tool for unity8 to change the size of the icons, also will unity 8 support themes?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There already is such a tweaking tool on the open applcation store for ubuntu touch. It is called tweakgeek(I am not sure if I heard that right from the video though). But so far there are no plans to implement it in the OS itself.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As for themes, unity8 already supports application level themeing, OS level themeing is being worked on and it will come.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">27:42 What is Ubuntu phone's goal on the global market in terms of marketshare?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The platform is just a few months old, and there are only 3 devices out yet. So it is still too early to talk about this, but the current market share is of course still low.(In previous statements they have said that market share is not something they are aiming for right now).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">30:57 Aside from the scopes initiative, are there any other initiatives to fix the application gap on phones and tablets?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, there was a huge hackathon in China. Work is being done together with universities. Something new will be announced very soon. They are constantly working on improving the SDK, API and other tools. They are communicating with 3rd party developers. However they have mentioned that none of this will come over night. They have also praised the Dekko email client application for being a great example of a good application for the platform.
Also they have mentioned that Linux itself has grown a long way even without binary compatibility with Windows or Mac applications.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">34:00 Will we see the return of the 100 papercuts project?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The project actually still exists. You could however make a global jam to make another such initiative with a list of problems, and you could even try to solve them.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">36:00 Is there an ETA on mir proprietary drivers?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">None.However support is being made on many things, including the fact that GTK applications now work on mir.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">41:27 Upuports project, is it good or bad?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It is great. The developers have stressed on how much harder it is to install Ubuntu on a random phone, than it is to install it on a random PC, mostly because some drivers can not be redistributed. They have also praised the OnePlus One port for Ubuntu touch. They have also reminded us that they still have the intent to run Ubuntu Linux on everything "From supercomputers to your toaster." (Libretoast, I am coming)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">47:20 What advice can you give to non-programmers to contribute to ubuntu phone?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You can contribute in discussions, you can contribute with your own designs, you can contribute by translating You can test how the devel and proposed images work, you can suggest application ideas(even better if you write project documentation about them).
Also have a look at one of my other blog posts:
http://thebluedrag.blogspot.com/2015/05/what-you-can-do-to-help-linux.html

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">55:35 Is the hud and global search coming back?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They had nothing specific to say about the HUD, they did however say it would be great if they could implement it somehow, with voice search.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">59:00 Will they add easter eggs?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes, they said it would be cool.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">59:40 Will Firefox remain the default browser on the desktop? There was talk that it would be replaced by Chromium, or that it could be replaced with the phone Web browser?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
They have said that they would not be surprised if Firefox was replaced as the default web browser on the desktop. However no such decision has been made. They also said that they would need many discussion and feedback rounds for that. So everything is open.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello everyone.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have decided to start a new miniseries on this blog.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">08:00 How many devices with ubuntu have been sold?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Canonical community team members have said that they do not have the exact numbers of how many Ubuntu devices have been sold, they did however say that they are satisfied with the sales. They also said that sales are currently not their priority, their priority is to get customer feedback, and so far they are satisfied with the feedback. Michael Hall did also add that he is excited about some of the numbers from the application store, he said that the number of applications and downloads doubles every 4-6 months and that the application store currently has over 1800 applications.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">13:10 Voice commands on the phone?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The community team members have said that voice commands will come, however, they are not a priority right now. What little work was done so far is mostly based on pocketsphinx. They are hoping to make voice commands a completely local technology so that no data will be se3nt to servers on the internet, due to privacy concerns.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">22:00 Wifi hotspot on Ubuntu mobile devices?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It will probably come with OTA-6

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">23:40 How long will the BQ e4.5 receive updates?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Their answer was: Indefinitely, or at least as long as it is technically possible. There is no planned EOL target date, however it is a tiny bit dependant on the manufacturer. They did also say that in terms of updates they definitely plan to handle that better than Android does. They have mentioned that this is possible because the system is now well layered into multiple layers, so they are able to update the base system layer without interfering with the OEM layer.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">26:30 Will we be able to use KDE plasma mobile alongside Unity 8, the same way we can use KDE plasma 5 alongside unity 7 on the desktop?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Canonical engineers have not said a definite yes, but they did seem optimistic about it because, Plasma mobile is able to use the Ubuntu SDK applications, it was built on top of a Ubuntu touch image, it was another proof that the separation of system layers worked and because current ubuntu touch images still run a upgraded LightDM login manager. However they are still in contact with KDE developers, and they hope that click packaging will work with it. They also said that many small details still have to be figured out, like modifications to LightDM on unity8.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">34:10 Will we have a quick camera option and an option for emergency contacts on the lockscreen?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The design team is looking to make the lockscreen more customisable and interactive. Also emergency dialling will be improved. However so far there are no plans to implement a quick camera on the lock screen.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">39:50 Will application launch times be improved?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Community team members have confirmed that Canonical is aware of the issue. They have also said that it is internally discussed and they are working on it. They have also said that in their case the issue is not one big issue why applications are launching so slowly, but rather they have many small issues. Some of thema re in apparmor, others in the launching script, the SDK, etc...

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The link to the session:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47GczsHH9aI
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The end. Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955978306612346826.post-85608542479223679352015-07-28T23:12:00.000+01:002015-08-05T14:14:02.131+01:00Ubuntu phone:Android app support is a double edged blade<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When talking about Ubuntu phones, one of the usual comments is that people say: Canonical should enable Android applications to run on Ubuntu phones.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I will admit, initially I liked the idea...until I saw the first counterarguments.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Here are some reasons why supporting Android applications could kill the platform in it's infancy.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
1)Other platforms have tried it...And failed.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Windows(phone)-Supports Android applications
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Blackberry OS-Supports Android applications
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Tizen-is a carbon copy of Android
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Sailfish-Supports Android applications
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Is any of those mobile platforms a market success? No. Even Windows phone has barely a 3-4% market share. Tizen still could prove itself, but it is a carbon copy of Android.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Would you want to have emulated Android applications on your Ubuntu phone? Probably not. Let me describe you some of the horrors with Android applications on other platforms:
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">"The Android applications have the feeling of second rate ports, plus most of them are stripped down old versions of the same applications on Android."
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">"Most of the time the applications are even too confused too decide if they want to use the native or the emulated Android keyboard"
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">2)Supporting Android applications would be like a slap to the face to existing Ubuntu applications and scope developers
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">If Canonical decided to support Android applications, they would lose most of their current third party application developers for the phone. Basically you could simply say goodbye to native Ubuntu phone applications.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Why would a developer develop NATIVE applications for Ubuntu touch if he could just develop an Android application, publish it on the Google play market(to a much wider audience). And he could then just publish a second rate port on the Ubuntu application store?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">3)You would either have to destroy the security features of Ubuntu touch, or the Android applications would barely work.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Let me tell you a little bit on how application security on Ubuntu touch works:
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Everything is a sandbox.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">That means all the applications can not reach data on the phone unless it goes trough something called "The content hub". In other words an application has to be specifically designed for usage with the content hub to reach any data that was not created inside the sandbox of the application.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Since Android applications are not designed with that in mind, that means many Android applications(especially file mangers) would be useless.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">An alternative is to destroy the security within click and snappy packages.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">4)Scopes would become less-functional
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Since Android applications can not communicate with the content hub, that also means that scopes would be unable to reach the data from Android applications via the traditional way, if they could do it at all.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">If they hypothetically could that would be a huge hack and potentially a huge security hole.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So to summarise supporting Android applications on Ubuntu phones would probably be a tactical victory but a strategic defeat.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">tl;dr Supporting Android applications on Ubuntu phones could be a bad idea, but mostly it could ruin the platform in the long term.Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955978306612346826.post-3530022001267807392015-07-07T23:40:00.001+01:002015-07-07T23:40:22.880+01:00Why Ubuntu unity8/Ubuntu on phones and tablets could be the next hot thing.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Even though I still don't have my own unity8 phone, I have been part of the whole hype around Ubuntu phones. My own Ubuntu story started with Ubuntu 12.04 and around those times the first rumours of Canonical working on a mobile variant started going around. Or rather that was read from Mark Shuttleworths words. It turned out they did work on mobility but not a variant ;) .

I even made some applications for the new platform which landed me on this list(on the bottom under the name Mario Kamenjak):
https://developer.ubuntu.com/pioneers
Sadly my shirt has not reached me yet(but I blame Croatian customs, it's a long story that involves certain accents that are only in the Croatian alphabet in my address). Keep in mind that although certain phones already are on the market and even selling above expectations, the whole Ubuntu on mobiles project is still in it's alpha/beta stage. Canonical still hopes to have a convergence ready phone before the end of this year.
But well enough with that for now here are the actual reasons on why I believe Ubuntu has a more than decent chance to survive the global smart-phone market.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">1.Convergence

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What Ubuntu engineers consider convergence is that they are trying to make one code work on every platform. The usability goal for that is that you can seamlessly switch your devices from desktop to mobile mode and vice versa. That means you only need one device either a tablet or a phone and that device can serve as a full powered desktop machine as well. Depending on which device mode you will be c<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">urrently using the applications will adapt, And also in some circumstances you will even be able to use desktop applications on your phone or tablet, probably even with an interface that adapts itself. Also Ubuntu is aiming for 100% convergence. Unlike a certain other competitor who will even in it's next operating system have a dedicated mobile version, once Unity8 merges with desktop Ubuntu there will be no special "Ubuntu for mobiles". There will be only "Ubuntu" with one single code-base.
But why hasn't unity8 yet been merged with the main desktop? The answer is stability. And the fact that a chunk of the planned feature set has not yet been implemented.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">2.Scopes

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Scopes are aiming to provide an innovative way for users to get their information. No need for web applications, you get your information directly to your home screen. Scopes have also the aim to reduce the amount of "bloatware" the OEM's make by giving them the alternative to make custom scopes which are already parts of system libraries. Also Canonical engineers are currently thinking on how to make scopes more interactive, or even how to preview some information more efficiently. Currently when you click or tap on some article in a scope it opens the web browser, however Ubuntu engineers are trying to think of ways how to replace the web browser in such interaction with scopes.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">3.Canonical's ecosystem

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Canonical will not enter the smart-phone market with empty hands. The number of application in Ubuntu's mobile application store is already in the thousands. Plus you will be able to use all the desktop applications as well. Also over the years Canonical has been jumping trough hoops to build up it's ecosystem. There is Ubuntu snappy core, and even the whole snappy buzzword with everything that comes with it and there are Canonicals IoT efforts. They have been in talks with the bigger chunk of the mobile industry, many OEM's and as I have read "Network carriers are literally waiting to jump on it." The current Ubuntu Desktop will also be a great contributing <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">factor to the phone ecosystem.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">4. Mobile computers, not phones

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have made several polls about how smart-phone users use their phones. I have asked people if they use their smart-phones more as phones(calls and texting) or as computers(everything else). Even though I expected them to say that they use them more as computers, the results were still shocking. The overwhelming majority (85%) stated that they use their smartphoe as a computer more often than they use it for it's phone capabilities. It seems that calls and SMS have become just another feature.
And this is exactly where Ubuntu's convergence will come. With it your smart-phone will actually be a computer (even a desktop one). You have a full powered traditional Linux, not a cut down and hidden beneath several layers one on your phone.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">5. Innovation

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As you may have noticed I have been following this roject quite extensively. I have been reading the news, I have visited and asked them questions in Q&A sessions and I even have many of their engineers and community personnel available on social networks(those guys quite like Google+ like I do). And other than the scopes and convergence mantra there is another third mantra: "We aren't copy cats." Ubuntu unity8 has some revolutional changes. When talking with Ubuntu engineers none of them wil take the words "But this is how Android/WP/iOS do it." as an argument. Because if you want to make a better product you have to risk to try and make something that is better and not just equally as good. More and more customers are also becoming bored by current smart-phone designs, and there is Ubuntu's chance as well, this is where scopes jump in.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6. It is easy (and fun) to develop for

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> This is a very good one. It is extremely easy to develop applications for Unity8. The programming languages you can use are QML, HTML5, python, C++, C,javascript and there is support for Java files. But the good part is that there are QML and HTML5 API's. Rumours are that even a C++ API might come but I have heard that from only one person. It is a rarity that a Linux distribution provides an API. And now another great thing...Every first time Linux programmer learns the pain of how hard it is to package .deb or .rpm files. That is completely gone, Ubuntu's .click and soon to be .snappy packages will be packaged in seconds.
Also I really like QML. To demonstrate how easy it is I will just tell you this story. I used to be a Java developer. However I instantly fell in love with QML's syntax. When I was making my first Ubuntu application with QML all I had to do was to download and install the Ubuntu SDK, read 2 tutorials, package the application and then I sent it to the store where it was approved in seconds. All of that happened in 45-60 minutes.
For those of you who want to develop applications for multiple operating systems, there is an HTML5 API.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That is it. I hope I haven't missed anything and I hope the article was interesting :)

relatively new IMHO). Everyone thinks it is the new tablet and smart-phone, however Tablets were just a fusion of two already existing
technologies (smart-phones and Ultra mobile laptops) and smart-phones
were basically upgraded phones(everyone already had a habit of using
phones). Everyone is hyped up about smart-watches.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">However
everyone forgets that the vast majority of people don't even have a
habit of wearing watches. Some young people people even(myself included)
never had such a habit and consider wearing watches uncomfortable.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In my opinion smart-watches don't offer anything that a smart-phone can't offer you. Some of you will say that it is tiresome to get out your phone out from your pocket,but that argument really only works with summer clothing. When you have long sleeves it is equally tiresome to roll your sleeves as it is to get out the smart phone from your pockets. Plus it makes you wear one more device.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So I have prepared a poll on the side of this blog post,please tell me your opinions on whether you will buy a smart-watch. As for myself, I just consider it a gimmick which I am not interested into. I am much more interested into augmented reality technologies like smart-glasses i.e. Google Glass and HoloLens. Though Google Glass seems to be design wise more something to take out on a date with friends so I would prefer it over HoloLens. I can't wait for Google's Glass 2. Now that might be a revolution.Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955978306612346826.post-53670106515474260182015-05-15T22:04:00.001+01:002015-08-09T21:48:56.313+01:00What you can do to help Linux?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Let's face it today there are many people who are very
enthusiastic about cutting edge technologies like GNU+Linux. However
many of them have only vague ideas about how they can contribute to
Linux and how they can help Linux establish a better position on the
desktop market.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Well don't worry,there are many. Here are some
in a top 10 list.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">1)
Write documentation

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">If you are a programmer(even not the most experienced one) the
best thing you can do is to write proper documentation for your
software. The reason for this is that by doing that you lay the
groundwork for the rest of this list,especially for number 2. Also it
does not have to be your own software. In the Linux world there are
many libraries, API's, SDK's. In fact most good Linux developers are
accustomed to using their actual Operating system as their
development environment. However the problem is that many libraries,
API's and SDK's and such are not well documented. Sometimes not even
documented at all. This presents a hurdle for anyone developing third
party applications who is not at least a seasoned programmer, and
even they find it highly uncomfourtable. By writing documentation you
are immensely helping other programmers. Don't forget to write many
code examples in your documentation. Everything from hello world
examples to complex algorhythms.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">2)Program

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Another great way to contribute to Linux is to write software for
it. Just think about how nice it would be to have an application that
does this and that and start writing. Or if you aren't up to writing
a whole new application you can just join the developers of some
other application if it is open source,or you can fork other
applications as long as you credit the authors. Of course all of this
in the case that the application is open source. Or you can join the
developers of a Linux distribution. You know a great CLI program but
want an interface for it? Why not write one yourself? Or if you feel
up to it,the Linux kernel and base system developers are always
looking for fresh recruits. However the main issue right now for
desktop Linux is the lack of 3rd party support. So ideally
you should develop 3rd party applications, and ideally
provide an API from your application and its libraries.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">3)Package

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Pacakging is the process of transforming software from it's source
code form into a more easily installable software package. The most
common Linux software packages are known as .deb and .rpm.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Linux is very convenient for installing software. You just open up
your software center, look around for your desired application for a
bit and click install. Installing software on Almost every Linux
distribution is no harder that installing software on your
smartphone. Then for some software which is packaged but not on your
software center, you have to use some google-fu, download the right
package, double click on it and install it. However once in every
while you will find some unpackaged software and to install such
software, it can be a hassle. Especially for novice users. If you
decide to do some packaging work by packaging some as of yet
unpackaged software you will make the life of many Linux users a lot
simpler. You can even go a step further and try to submit your
packages to software repositories of some of the more popular Linux
distributions.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">4)Spread
the word

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Desktop Linux is still not a common household name.Most people
outside of technology circles still don't even know it exists. Go out
there on the internet, write blogs, communicate with people who are
not Linux users. Of course,don't be annoying with it, however as soon
as the topic arises or when you see an opening to start the topic,
why not? Tell them how it is free(as in freedom and very often as in
free beer), stable and secure. How people who invest a few minutes
are able to find Linux distributions tailored for them, and how when
using open source it is the computer that serves the user, not vice
versa. Just remember, more users means more developers and more power
users. If those developers are able to create something of value on
closed platforms, just imagine what beauty could they make on an open
platform like Linux.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">5)Send
bug reports

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Some people have a preconceived notion that programmers don't want
bug reports. They could not be more wrong about it. A good programmer
really loves well written bug reports. Usually he will try to help
even with not well written bug reports,but most of the time that is
just not possible. Most Linux distributions have implemented bug
report systems that do most of the work for you. In a well written
bug report you provide detailed information about your hardware, the
software you are using, the operating system you are using it on and
detailed steps on what you did that triggered the bug. This allows
the developer to reproduce the bug and subsequently fix it. And by
sending bug reports you may accidentally even find out that the bug
was already fixed or a workaround for it exists if many people
already encountered the same bug as you did.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">6)Donate

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Most open source software is given to the user for free(as in free
beer).However developers also need food. And there are usually other
costs, like server upkeep. Although open source developers have other
options for income(like ads or selling support for their software),
donations can help greatly as well. And if you want a developer to
support a certain device, you can even donate that device.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">7)Translate

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Even if English is the most widespread language in the world.Even
if English is the language of the Internet, some people are still
quite uncomfourtable with using software that is not in their mother
tongue. And while most Linux distributions offer translations to most
of the worlds languages, most 3rd party software is not
translated, and if it is the quality of the translations is debatable.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">8)Write
tutorials

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There are many new users on Linux every year. Also often software
changes, which changes the users workflow. So many users will always
appreciate a well written tutorial. Remember that when writing a
good tutorial it is always better to guide the user by his hand.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">9)Help
people use the software

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Because every moment Linux gains so many new users, those users
often encounter problems. It would be beneficial if you would roam
the forums or various help websites for Linux and try to answer some
of the many calls for help Linux users have.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">10)Be
part of the community

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Remember that Linux is a community driven project. In fact it is
often better described as a movement than as a single operating
system(which it isn't,every one of the 1000's of Linux distributions
is its own system). Go out there and let your voice be heard. The
different people leading software projects based on Linux usually
keep track of the opinion of the community. In fact the community
itself is usually punishing to those who don't listen. So your
opinion might change the Linux world for the better! Just go out there, roam the forums, write blog posts like these etc...

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So those are only guidelines. However if you do follow them, you are probably doing the right thing. And who knows,maybe one of those open source companies notices you or a company in need of a Linux administrator notices you as well, so you finally get your Linux dream job! ;)

Project dashboard

Project dashboard is
a project management application for Ubuntu mobile phones. It enables
the user to manage software on Github, planing events(including
personal events),keeping track of classes and projects,supports
various plugins, bug tracking,an inbox with github notifications...In
short it is a developers mobile application of choice.

What I
have noticed is that the graphic design of this application is great.
It fits perfectly into the standard UI design of the system. Another
thing I like about this application is that despite its feature
fullness the application does not seem to drain system resources.
Another Thing I like is the fact that this application has everything
a developer would want on his mobile phone application.

I have
only 1 suggestion and 1 very tiny problem I have noticed. My
suggestion is to make a text editor plugin with at least basic syntax
highliting for either ANSI C or QML. Or just syntax higlighting for
statements which are very common between popular languages.The
problem I have noticed is that it needs a maintenance
update(however,I have not noticed any breakage in my short time using
it).

Anyhow I give this application a 5.0/5.0.I really like
this application.And I think developers should aim their applications
to meet the quality standards of applications like these.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Project gutenberg is an app that connects to the online service project Gutenberg.As such it provides over 46000 free ebooks.Including epub,kindle and html versions.Unfortunately I am not a lover of ebooks but I will try my best.

This app is very simple,and for this app that is enough,as it just serves to download ebooks.So it has all the features you would expect.You can browse popular ebooks,latest ebooks and random ebooks.Another thing I like about this application is that at least seemingly it does not seem to be just a web app.

One of the areas where this application can improve is that the color theme for this app could be improved.Another small problem is that once you select your ebook,if you choose to read it as html the application will redirect you to a web browser instead of reading it directly from the application.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Overall I give this application a 4.0/5.0.The areas where this application can improve do not seem to be big problems to me and yet the application does what it promises.I am sure ebook lovers will like this application.

I have decided to
start a new series of small application reviews for the Ubuntu phone
and Ubuntu unity8.So Since I like to play the occasional game of
Mahjong I decided to review “Green Mahjong”.One thing I have
noticed which is neither an advantage or disadvantage is that you
should play this application either on desktop or landscape mode(if
you are on a phone).Note Since I don't have a BQ phone yet and Unity8
on desktop is still in its alpa/beta stages I will test most
applications on the phone emulator which does not support landscape
mode yet.

So what are the pros
of this application?Well I like that the author decided to use
realistic graphics instead of a flat design or some cartoon graphics.
Also Also the app has a choice of several different levels so there
is some re-playability. Another pro I have noticed is that the
application has all the features you would expect from a Mahjong
solitaire game.

The application also
has some negatives.As much as I liked the graphics in this game,the
shadowing on the tiles was too strong.And it might have been because
of the emulator but the application seems to be not very laggy,but a
tiny bit laggy. Another thing that I don't like is something that
most Mahjong apps even on other platforms don't have:They only
support Mahjong solitaire,there is no game mode for Mahjong Reach.

To summarize.I like
this application.I give it a 4.5.It is not a masterpiece but I can
clearly see that the developer wanted this application to be really
good.I can see the effort of the developer in this application.It is
free so if you want a game to waste 15 minutes while you are waiting
for something,download it.And the developer is actively responding to
user reviews.

It's not CM that will take control of Android.It's Microsoft that is orchestrating the attack behind the curtain.

Let's give some details about the whole thing so we can build a bigger picture:
-Microsoft is threatening Android OEM's with patents.Android OEM's are paying the MS tax.
-Microsoft has low end Lumia phones with Android,with an interface that is imitating the look and feel of Windows phone.
-Microsoft is trying to push it's office and skype onto Android phones by force.
-Microsoft open sourced its .net
-They even included an Android emulator in Visual Studio.
-Microsoft even offered CM a bribe(which was refused AFAIK)
Microsoft knows that the easiest way to kill Android is to take control of it.Because without Google as a driving force behind it Android will lose a lot of its vision and innovation.
Furthermore it is a very unfair(in some cases even illegal tactic) that huge megacorps like to use.Microsoft used to be especially feared for using this tactic very often.You can find it on Wikipedia,it is called: "Embrace,Extend,Extinguish".

While some might not like Google,a bigger evil is trying to take Android over and destroy it.Some people are criticising Google lately for being overly authoritative in the Android world.But it might be that Google is trying to make defensive manoeuvres against Micrososoft.
Basically while the fact that Android is open source is one of its best advantages,it also offers a soft belly for Google's enemies.Network adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15875911185208908040noreply@blogger.com0
